Lesson 10 - Wrap Up
Week 10 -The Wrap Up--My biggest discovery was to find databases that will help the trouble learner. The ones that are not at the top of their class. No matter who you are the tools are here for them to find. It can be exciting and fun while you are learning. I know it was for me, although I did run into some tough subjects or programs. I will work on those. We should be thankful we have libraries in small towns so the people who do not have computers at home can go to them. We will need to push patrons to get their state library card. I have learned that we a facebook page now this will help spread the word, also with e-mails. Make sure we have hand-outs on hand and let our volunteers know about this, the word will get out faster. Well, Jane and Julie I made it through this. I just want to say thank you for your time and hard work you put into this program.

Lesson 9--History and Genealogy Resources-Ancestry Library, Heritage Quest and Sanborn Maps
#9--Ancestry Library --1) The first time I started the search I used my maiden name one hundred thousand to look at. Then I tried my married name and there were one million results. I did find my name in the U.S. Public Records Index, Volume 1 and U.S. Phone and Address Directories. There was and mistake on the street address, everything else was right.
2) Looked up my grandparents on my Dad's side. I found death certificate's, census records and marriage records. I also got to see the names of Aunts, and Uncles. After this course is done I will dig deeper into this program.
3) I did not see any "Photos and Maps" tap to click on. I click on "Maps, Atlases & Gazetteers" it had 114 results. I then pick "Pictures" it had 4,581 sorted this was about U.S. yearbooks. Maybe our program does not have "Photos and Maps" tab.
4) Heritage Quest---I chose Search PERSI--I put in South Dakota, Lawrence county, German nothing came up. I went back and in Keyword, English I had one hit. "HBO's Deadwood and the English language" this article is in the Great Plains Quarterly, Lincoln, NE: Feb 2007, Vol. 27, Iss. 4. If I wanted to obtain a copy of the article I would need to contact the Allen County Public Library Foundation. Send this form describing the articles to be copied, provide the full entry from PERSI and the name of the journal. Request only six articles at a time. The charge is $7.50 for each letter, pre-paid plus $0.20 per page copied to be billed to you. Request not acceptable by phone, fax, or e-mail. Please allow 6-8 weeks. This would not show me the article to fine out how many pages might be in the article.
5) Sanborn Maps, -- I chose the Kleemann Building which is on Custer Ave. The Post Office is on Custer Ave and 7th street, in August 1891 they both showed up. There is and alley between these two buildings. As I went to Mar 1897 you could still see the Kleemann Building not the post office. In the Sept 1903 across from the Post Office a flour, grain & company showed up. In the year June 1928 the Post Office is still standing and being use. This was nice to see how a town or city has changed over the years. We have some patrons come in and ask us if we have a map for Custer and we can show them how to use the databases on our references computer. This program I really enjoyed it. The more you work with this you get comfortable with it. That I like!

#8--ArchiveGrid and Camio
#1 ArchiveGrid -- Started this lesson off we had to type in "Sitting Bull autograph card" it gave us one result. Click into that it gave us notes and summaries; of Sitting Bull's life. I learned his date of birth with a question mark after the date and the date in which he died. Sitting Bull was also know by three other names. He was a Native American shaman and leader of the Hunkpapa Sioux. He was wounded in battle many occasions. He did not like the White man coming into his territory. Sitting Bull led the Sioux and Cheyenne warriors against U.S. Soldiers of the 7th Cavalry at the battle of Little Bighorn. Many were killed. Sitting Bull led his tribe into Canada where they lived until surrendering to U.S. Forces. After his capture he toured with Buffalo Bill Cody's Wild West Show. Sitting Bull was killed while resisting arrest for his unwillingness to abandon the traditions of the ritual Ghost Dance, which had been outlawed. You can say he lived his life his way and also stood up for what he believed in.
#2 For my own search I looked up Elvis Presley it had 84 results. In the Hugo Keesing Collection on Elvis Presley as you clicked into it you would see a table of contents. Starting with abstract, important information for Users of the collection, Historical note, Scope and Contents of the Collection, Custodial History and Acquisition information, Processing information, Arrangement of Collection. It just went on and on. I also checked into Brigham Young University -- Preliminary Register of the Ken Darby papers, 1929-1992 this told you how Ken Darby new Elvis Presley, and that he composed "Love Me Tender" and acted as vocal coach to Elvis Presley. There were online searchers you could look at for more information. I also notice under the title search you can see "read more" a page would come up give you Notes and Summaries, This collection covers and Contact and archivist to learn more about access to materials in this collection. Inside the box {Brigham Young University}. You could click into it, but you have to belong to the University to go into the site.
#3 CAMIO -- A--Look up "Paul Revere" It showed you the items made by him. I looked at a teaspoon, tea urn, I really like the Goblet - date 1782, picture of the Boston Massacre 1770. I also liked the Coffee Urn. I liked when you clicked on the view a high-resolution full image. I was able to see some of the details in the picture.
B--In the Sioux search I found bead work, paintings on oil canvas, paintings in pencils and color pencils. Pipe bowl and pipe stem was pretty. I saw blanket, saddle bag, war club, beaded dress and boll and baby bonnet, etc. C--As for my favorite artist I do not have one. If someone came into the library and had a artist name I would take them to our research computer and show them how to look them up.
D--I picked "Fitz Hugh Lane for this exercise and it showed 14 works. It was cool to be able to put them in a slide show. At lease you could see the picture well and in the view high-resolution was great. To be able to save this on a webpage as you work on your project would be able to save time and what a great slide show you would have in your presentation. Now when a question pops into my head about history or art I will know where to look for it, in ArchiveGrid and Camio.

#7--WorldCat and More FirstSearch
I clicked into WorldCat and the advanced tab was already open for me. So I typed in my book title "A Clearing in the Wild by Jane Kirkpatrick". I hit search at the bottom of the page. It was the #4 book on the list of books that showed up. As you look at the book it gave the title, below that it gave you the author, publication. As you click onto the book it gave you lots more information about the book. As I was looking a little bit down I saw (Libraries worldwide own item: 1129) so I clicked into it and it gave me the location & libraries in which you can fine this book. The first library I had chosen it said --Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage, Alexander Mitchell LIBR was the top library. the next two I had chosen said--404-File or directory not found. On the fourth try I got into the site and this was Siouxland LIBR. It gave you the OCLC control number, it was a Fiction book and gave the ISBN number and how many copies they had in there library. You could also put a hold on the book if you would like too. These were in South Dakota. I also went into Iowa the top #1 went right to the book. This library had all the same kind of information but it only had on book. The three other ones I tried gave the same messages as in South Dakota. I click on the authors name and it showed one other book she had written in was on sound recording and I clicked on the next same authors name and it gave me 21 other books she had written. It showes two subjects the first one I picked it showed 175 titles matched:Women pioneers--fiction. Then I saw you could go to a web links to download or place a hold on some of the other books. Then I went back to click on the second subject. It had 18 titles matched:Social isolation--fiction. It also had some sound recording in this section to. I did see you could put some of these on hold or add to my list.
When I looked into other databases I chose ClasePeridica - Earthquakes it gave me 91 hits but within each search you could look at 457 searches. So plenty of information within this program.
Part 2 OAIster The record found 766. I had to look for a long while before I would fined any books in South Dakota. Well it is getting late and I had to log off again. This was more relaxing on this course. Almost caught up.

Lesson 6--EBooks on Ebscohost
1. I typed different subjects in and not much would show up. Then I typed in Mexican, lucky the first title was - cooking the Mexican way. So this e-book had all the information in that you needed. I also checked into other e-books about Mexicans and Mexico. The ebooks would be good so when you went on a trip to Mexico or any country you could refer back to your e-book to look up information you might have forgotten.
2. The Constitution--I typed this in and there were 175 results. The book "The Constitution, the law, and freedom of expression, 1787-1987" The Table Of Contents was a big help in picking out which book you would use for your paper.
3) Class project in Advanced Search "Changing Image of the City:Planning for Downtown Omaha, 1945-1973 came up. You click into this and it gave you who its by: Daly-Bednarek, Janet R. Universty of Nebraska Press, 1992. eBook, 306p. then the subjects, Database: eBook Collection. You could add to folder. eBook full text, Download (Offline) and a Table of Contents.
To get to this point of information was kind of hard. This program was really hard. I will look into it after this course is over.

Lesson 5 --Gale Virtual Reference Library
My choice is World of Forensic Science -- Fluids-Hirszfeld - Gene - It started out with the history about the gene. Close to the end of this I saw I could click onto - DNA Fingerprint. This is what I was looking for, it gave me the information I needed. I could print, e-mail, listen, and download mp3, download PDF to eReader. There were multi-volumes to work with. If a patron asked me about a topic I will be able to show them the GVRL site.
I looked up other ways to find DNA it gave other books to look at. Some of them gave me graphics and when I listen to the article it would highlight the sentence they were reading. This helped me to understand some of the technical terms.
I am almost caught up!

Lesson 4 -- Proquest
1. For this week I chose Meteors I have always been interested in them. Every night when I go home from work I am always watching the sky. Maybe just once I might see a meteor shower. This is why I picked Science & Technology typed in meteors and there are 22228 results I thought oh, boy. So I did check into some articles not too trilled. Then I notice on the right hand side I saw sort results by, so I clicked on the arrow it gave me - Publication data (Oldest first) or Publication data (Most recent first). Well I picked most recent first. It gave me the same amount of hits. I saw Scholarly Journals had 15552 hits. I still could not really find what I was looking for. I see the box Suggested Subjects I clicked on the meteors meteorites and comets that gave me 192 results. Now I can find what I am looking for. In my search I also came across comets and asteroids. Now I have found plenty of information on all of these in one spot. Some of the information was easy to read. The scholarly journals were too technical for me. Trade Journals and magazines were lots of help too. In each of these they gave great information on what I was looking for.
1.a. I have looked into other blogs like you all asked us to. I found some of them seem to be getting excited about how much information we can find in these programs. Some of the blogs have not started or are behind like me, so I do not feel so bad.
2. I choose heart disease and 4 publication came up. I picked the first one on the list, it gave me the publication information. Then I clicked on (Medical Sciences-Cardiovascular Diseases). It gave me 17 publications. As I kept going I found more information on what I was looking for. You do have to keep track on how you got to some of the articles. I did get lost once. Had a hard time finding the article again. As they say practice makes perfect. I know I will use Proquest more often.

Lesson 3--SIRS Issues Researcher and Discoverer
Lesson 3 SIRS Discoverer - I had already done the armadillo in the first lesson so I picked the bangle tiger. I think they are a very pretty animals. They are the largest of all the big cats, and even bigger than a lion. Bengals are the true kings of the jungle!
In most of the articles I read stated that the tigers are becoming extinct. People are moving into their territory chasing them out. Then there's the poaching going on. I also found inside one article at the end of it was more wed sites you could visit. I did find pictures and various reading levels of the articles.
2)The country I chose was India when I click onto the country facts I saw India on the right side it showed two things-subjects and graphics. On the left side was where the information was, on the right side is where they showed the map and flag of the country. After the name of the country below they had three teacher resources facts to go into. Each one of these were at a different level of reading. Then it started with the facts - pronunciation of the name, official name, independence, capital, population, geography and the weather, economy, government, and the history of India. I also notice at the end of the article if you click on the Related Articles it gave you more information about India. This was very interesting.
Maps of the World icon I searched Connecticut because I think it would be a very interesting place to go. I was right too, the information is great if any body needed to do a report for any type of school the graphics and maps are great. There was so many other places to click into for more information. This was like getting candy from a store for me!
I went to Science Fair Explorer-Explore A Topic, I picked In the Junk Drawer-Physics then I picked a needle that knows where North is. This told you what you needed to become a magnet yourself. It also had graphics to help with the instruction. I feel kids & adults with learning problems could benefit from this program.
SIRS Issues Researcher - 1. Under the leading issues I picked animal experimentation when I click into the search there were quit a few to choose from. It also had Narrow Your results - All source type 151 results, newspapers 35 results, magazines 43 results, gov't documents 10 results, primary sources 1 results, viewpoints 22 results, reference 2 results, graphics/media 38 results 1 video results. They also had pro & cons in this one search. In some of the other searchers were just articles. Just some much information!
Curriculum Pathfinders - I chose Fine Arts - Opera - it gave you some performers to search into. There was video's, pictures and their history. After you click into one of performers you can click into the Performing Arts search this is where all kinds of information can be found. I think I will continue this kind of search after this class is over!

Learning Express Library (wk 2)
This learning express library resource is a great learning tool for all ages. I picked the math department. You take the test.and finished it. I click on my View Results, it took you to the diagnostic page. Showed you how many you got right or wrong, how many points possible and how many points earned. Then when you click on the view answers it would show in gray the right answer and in red means your answer was wrong. Then it would give you an explanation of the problem. This will be a great tool for all ages who are having difficulties in their class rooms.
For the Job Search & Workplace skills I picked the vocabulary & Spelling. As I was doing this I like the idea about using the buddy partner system. The three way practice will work well with people who do need to here it, see it, and speak it. This will help people who would like to improve their writing skills and everything else that goes with the job search program. This program helps us to build up our weaknesses in the areas we need help in.
For the type a search term I typed air traffic controller. I found it easy to read and if you click on the tool bar you could click on the down arrow to go to the next page. If you needed to make the print bigger or smaller just click on the tool bar for the minus or plus button. The book also gave you other references to go. I just can not wait to let people know these type of programs are their for them to use.

World Book Public Library Edition
Lesson 1a
I pick the Armadillo for my research on World Book Online for Kids. When I typed armadillo it gave me 2 articles and one picture. Article about the Armadillo and the other was South America. It also gave me a picture. The article tells you the armadillos have strong claws for digging burrows in the ground for shelter. When I looked at the picture I saw some lines on the armadillos back. The lines on their backs are bands of bony armor. These bony pieces work together so that the animal can bend. Only one kind can curl up into a ball. They do this to protected them self's. If this does not work then they burrow into the ground so they can hide. No enemy can bite through the bony shell. Some armadillos have six bands of armor across their back. Armadillos in the United States have nine bands. These armadillos are about 2 feet long, including their tail.
I wanted more information about armadillos so I went to Info Finder. Armadillos live from Argentina to the southern United States. They use their long, narrow tongue to lick up beetles and other insects. Armadillos eat fruit, snails, spiders, and wormst. They do this because they have very small teeth well back in their mouth. The South American three-banded armadillos can curl up into a hard, tight ball with the shell on the outside and the head and feet tucked in out of harm's way.
When I went to the Reference Center on armadillos it gave me some of the same information as the other two. Armadillos are the only known animal host for the bacteruim that causes leprosy (Hansen"s disease) in human beings. This is why armadillos prove important in leprosy research.
With each of these searchers starting with the younger kids to the older kids more information showed up on the left and right side of the page. In fact I was so in gross with all of this information I had to stop so I could post my lesson in.
I also checked this information in other country's. So many links to look into. Some of it was easy to click into and other's took time for me to figure out. I hope this will post ok .
All I have to say is I hope this gets better as we continue on with our lessons.
